Successful Start in St. Albans
We traveled North this weekend, to begin our season at BFA’s Chisti Corrigan Blitz Tournament in St. Albans, VT. Although we knew it would result in some good hockey experience, the girls’ effort in two weeks of hard training and practice was also rewarded with two wins and the 2009 tournament title!
Friday evening, Hanover won its first ever shootout (1-0) for a 2-1 victory over 2009 Vt. Girls’ D1 Champion, Essex High School. Having played the Hornets to a hard-fought 1-1 tie after regulation and a five minute overtime, our girls prevailed in a shootout behind a perfect (0 for 3) shutout by goaltender Emily Eickhoff, while Tessa Hill scored the lone shootout tally.
To top that effort… on Saturday, propelled by goals from Madison Hill, Leah Eickhoff and Katie McLaughlin, the Marauders battled back from two single goal deficits to overtake the fast and skilled host team (and apparent tournament favorite) BFA St. Albans, by a 3-2 score. Freshman Kelly Gaudet was outstanding in her first high school start in goal, while Emily Eickhoff shared the net duties in delivering the win…. each allowing only one goal.
These games displayed a real team effort, with tenacious fore- and back-checking, and great goaltending. Still lots of work to be done, but a positive start to the 2009-10 campaign.
